Why do bad things happen to good innocent people?

Why do bad things happen to good innocent people?

Again, I consider this question today in the aftermath of the bombings in Boston. As I did in the aftermath of Aurora, Newtown, Columbine, Mumbai, and 9/11.

I still do not have an answer to this question.

I have yet to hear an answer that satisfies me.

Many attempts to answer this question are more maddening than no answer at all.

I do not think anyone really knows.

The explanation that makes the most sense to me is probably the SMA (Standard Mormon Answer):

    1. Agency insures that people will make choices that impact others negatively.
    2. The Atonement, in its eternal sense, erases (causes a universal healing of) everything bad that ever happens to us.

For those who want there to be no pain in the here and now, I suppose this is no answer.

I am not looking for no pain in the here and now. That said, I agree with the Utilitarians that less suffering is better than more suffering.

Agency allows for evil, but it does not explain acts of evil. Now, I am not sure if they can be explained…at least, whether they can be satisfactorily explained.

I think that the Atonement can bring comfort, though I am not sure in the SMA account of the Atonement does that for me.

The only good answer I’ve heard is from Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog:
    “Everything happens–”
    “Don’t say for a reason.”
“No! No, I’m just saying ‘everything happens’”

      Casey,

That sounds about where I am at right now. Thanks for sharing.

Bad things happen to innocent people for the same reason that bad things happen to guilty people, which is the same reason things happen to people, which is the same reason that trees grow, moldy fruit decompose, fires burn, the solar system spins, fish eat, rocks tumble, the sun rises, and rivers run downhill instead of up. They are all brute facts of existence without a purpose.

      the narrator,

What then are we to do about this brutal existence? Oh, and thanks for stopping by :)
