Trouble with Tofu

While I realize that there are more important topics to discuss right now, I'm asking for some quick help with preparing tofu for a family that thus far has been tofu-phobic :) Actually, I have had tofu before and am pretty ambivalent towards it, but my hubby and son want nothing to do with the stuff. The thing is that a couple of days ago, turned off by an unappealing and over-priced meat selection, I decided to buy a package of tofu and some beans instead of chicken and beef. Only $1.49 for a … [Read more...]

Palin’s Speech

Just finished watching Palin's speech.  I thought she was great.  She was feminine but tough.  She came off VERY well.  My two highlights--"...and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot, when that happens, what exactly is our opponent's plan?  What exactly does he seek to accomplish after he's done turning back the waters and healing the planet?"  This is hysterical. And I LOVED the shot of her youngest daughter licking her hand and smoothing out baby Trig's hair. … [Read more...]

The Teenage Pregnancy Question

I have a serious question for the women and men of America: if your daughter got pregnant at 17, would she tell you? I think that this is a huge test of a parent/child relationship, and on this particular front Sarah Palin passed. Her daughter came to her, told her the truth, and asked for and received her support. Elizabeth Foss has a great post on the subject. As American Christians, it can be hard for us to see imperfection. We hang on to the idea that if someone else has "done it right," … [Read more...]

Blogging much?

Hair Dye: Foxy or Frivolous

As part of my musings during my recent “quarter-life crisis”, I’ve been thinking about hair dye. I’m joking about the quarter-life crisis—it’s no crisis at all, but a renewed desire to feel good about my physical appearance after several years of non-stop nursing and/or pregnancy. But the hair dye question is no joke. I figure I’m a couple years from starting to notice glistening grey strands, so it’s time to make some decisions. For the gentlemen, hair dye is a no-go. Men look dignified as they g … [Read more...]

Take the Gloves Off, Boys

(New York Times photo of Governor Sarah Palin sitting on a bear skin)Last night I had dinner with an old friend who is a very active Democrat. He has worked in politics, both on the Hill and as a volunteer for a number of campaigns, including Obama. He is very enthusiastic about the ticket he will vote for in November. We are friends, and there is an awful lot we can agree on, but I was surprised by two things:First, I was surprised by how quickly my saying I was excited about Palin's nomination … [Read more...]

McCain chooses Palin

I've written about her before, here.A mother of 5 children, pro-life, and pro-family, she seems to be everything Nancy Pelosi isn't. But how can you be the vice-president of the US with a baby in tow?I'd love to hear your thoughts... … [Read more...]

Earning My Stripes–Part II

In the spirit of Juris Mater's post about her afternoon outing to the bank with children, I have another tale to tell; another piece of documentation about motherhood. Will it win me "Mother of the Year"? I highly doubt it. But will it add to the growing layers of my motherly identity? You betcha. :)Just this past week my family has been at the beach, enjoying a final summer getaway before the school year begins. They live hundreds of miles away in the midwest, so this week has been a … [Read more...]
