Women on the Court

Women on the Court July 14, 2009

In all likelihood Sotomayor will be confirmed this week, bringing the number of current female Supreme Court Justices to the whopping total of two, or approximately 22% of the nine Justices. In that women comprise over 50% of the U.S. population — and more than 50% of law school graduates — here’s hoping that Obama continues to find highly qualified women to fill the next few openings on the court.

Afterall, if both males and females are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), then don’t we need both males and females on the court to embrace the fullness of God’s diverse Creation?

From another perspective, women have been able to vote in the U.S. for less than a century, so it would be fitting if the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment in 2020 was celebrated with women as 5 of the 9 Justices — that is, a majority of the votes on the court.
