The face of God is the angels’ Scripture; Angels: Day 050 September 10, 2016

angels_augustine_3The face of God is the angels’ Scripture

We read God’s Word in the Bible. But the angels, says St. Augustine, read thwill of God directly, without sounding out syllables,  and this eternal Scripture is always before them.

Let us look, Lord, “at your heavens, the work of your fingers.” Clear from our eyes the mist with which you have covered them.

Let them praise your name, those people above the heavens, your angels, who have no need to look up at this firmament, or to gain knowledge of your Word by reading. Let them praise you. They always see your face, and read in it without any syllables in time what your eternal will wills. They read, they choose, they love. They are always reading, and what they read never passes away. For, by choosing and loving, they read the very unchangeableness of your counsel. Their book is not closed, nor is the scroll folded up, because you yourself are their book, and indeed you are so eternally. –St. Augustine, Confessions, 13.15

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Could I imitate the angels’ unceasing reading a little better by giving a little more time to Scripture each day?

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, who sent your Word to live among us, teach me to love your life-giving oracles, and let me read your will as readily as the angels do.
