Falling (Un)employment

Unemployment in the United States has been falling.  Great news, right?


One of the major reasons for this decline is the fact that many able-bodied people have simply left the workforce.  They’ve given up.

As the overall size of the workforce shrinks, the number of those actually employed tends to grow as a proportion of the remaining pool of available labor, and, thus, the unemployment rate tends to decline.
