Israel’s new shari‘a court judges

Israel’s new shari‘a court judges February 11, 2016

In J'lem, president's place
This is a meeting room in the official residence of the President of Israel. I was once part of a small group of visiting academics (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim) that met with then-President Ezer Weizman there at the residence (indeed, I think it may have been in this very room) and then, afterwards, had lunch with him.

It’s interesting from several angles.  I’ll mention two:

*  Many in the United States are worried, or claim to be worried, about the possible imposition of shari‘a upon non-Muslims in America.  In striking contrast, Israel, which has a proportionally  much larger Muslim population than the United States and which experiences considerable friction with Muslim communities both foreign and domestic, doesn’t seem to be worried.

*  Both the Israeli justice minister and the Joint (Arab) List favored the appointment of female qadis or judges to the shari‘a court.  That move was blocked not by Muslims, but by Jews.
