The American news media typically do undervalue the world of religions and religious believers.  (They’re not alone in such underestimation:  American foreign policy people largely missed the rise of militant Islam and the role that Pope John Paul II would play in bringing down Eastern European Communism.)  And, when the media talk about religion, they often get it very wrong.
