“9th Circuit deals Trump travel ban another defeat”

The Ninth Circuit is the court in which a group of nineteen Mormon scholars and/or scholars of Mormonism — I was among them — filed an amici curiae brief related to Mr. Trump’s travel ban back in April:

“Amici Curiae Brief by Scholars of Mormonism Opposed to Trump’s Refugee and Immigrant Ban”

There are, of course, legitimate security reasons to pay close attention to those who are admitted into the United States.  But this is simply another case in which Mr. Trump’s wild statements during the campaign and his (entirely predictable) lack of verbal discipline and intellectual seriousness since taking office have interfered with his ability to govern and to enact even positive elements of his program.  Had he not spoken so loudly and publicly about banning Muslims altogether, he might not be in the trouble on this issue that he is.  But he was incautious, demagogically appealing to low instincts in sectors of the electorate, and he’s paying the price for that.
