Quote of the Day (J. K. Rowling)

“I don’t take any responsibility for the lunatic fringes of my own religion” (J. K. Rowling).

This is from an press conference in which she discusses the Christian imagery and background to the Harry Potter series.

Please get it right; Christianity Today, not MTV:I was the journalist who made the comment that called out the response you note as your quote of the day at the Los Angeles News Conference 10-15-2007. I was there representing Christianity Today not MTV and no individual interviews were given. Taken out of context it misses the point. I said to Ms. Rowling: “Many in the Christian community are very sorry for the way your work has been maligned and you have been slandered by some Christians,” to which she replied with the quote you mis-attributed to MTV. ~ Connie Neal http://www.ConnieNeal.com

Thanks for the clarification. The statement was presumably made at a press conference – I provide a link to the article on the MTV web site which includes the quote. I’d be happy to replace it with a link to the Christianity Today web site if there is an article including the quote there as well.I thought the point was perfectly clear to those who have been following the varied Christian reactions to the Harry Potter novels. The fundamentalist fringe that received the most publicity was not typical of Christian reactions in general, and most Christians would not have been surprised by Rowling’s unveiling of a key source of her inspiration – many attentive readers saw such things all along and commented on them. Thanks again for the clarification, and more importantly for your part in the news conference that brought Rowling’s statements on the place of faith in her work as author to a wider audience.
