Dear Frank,

I stayed in bed this morning because I wanted so much to finish your wonderful book, And God Said, “Billy! I just loved it, and now have a growing list of folks to whom I want to present it, including my dear grandson Roman, who is 20.

While I was absolutely thrilled to have my name in the dedication, I confess that, when I started to read it, I had a few second thoughts about having my name in a book with so many four letter words in it! I confess to being “in the dark” about just what you were doing with Billy and why, but it all came clear in such a glorious way this morning. I am so honored to be on the dedication page, Frank, and “Billy” is just about the best book I have ever read. I love the way you talk about God.

When my husband Tony taught at the University of Pennsylvania, and students would come to tell him they no longer believed in God, he would ask them to tell him about the God in whom they no longer believed. When they did that, he would then say, “That’s great, because you are now ready to meet the God about whom I’ve been wanting to tell you.” I feel kind of dumb that I didn’t tumble earlier in my reading to the fact that poor Billy was living out and believing all the most awful God misconceptions that ever were. Maybe I didn’t get it right away because I’ve never know anyone quite as messed up about God as Billy, though a few folks in my world come close.

I am eager to read over again the wonderful last part of your book. I want to savor what you said there, and do a bit more reflecting than I did when I was so very anxious to see what was going to happen in the end to Billy.

I am really excited about having my grandson Roman read about Billy. And I must tell you that, as soon as I thought of giving a copy to him, I understood why all those four letter words were in it. Roman is a rapper, and has spent much time trying to explain to his grandmother why it is necessary to write songs using the “language” of those to whom he wishes his music to speak. Roman is not a God person right now, at least not in the same way that I am, and I think Billy’s journey might be very meaningful to him.

I look forward to talking with you – perhaps after I do a nice, slow reread of the last part of your book. Oh, and I just loved the crow, Miss Honeychurch, and how Brother Basil related to her.

Thank you for your book, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for making me part of the group to whom you dedicated it.
