The Rev. Frank Schaefer (author of “Defrocked”) meets Frank Schaeffer (author of “Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God”) at the Wild Goose  Festival June 2014 I mean how confusing is that?! Here’s the passage from my new book WHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD: How to give love, create beauty and find peace I read to open my talk at the Wild Goose Festival. My youngest grandchildren Lucy and Jack are still comfortable with a paradoxical way of... Read more

4:57 AM. I’m sitting in the dark next to the BBQ pit of the restaurant across from the room Genie and I are living in while we’re at Wild Goose.  Yesterday was a long day of driving, the second since leaving the Boston area to come here. We arrived in time for a 2 hour filming session with Brian McLaren who was interviewing me for a Wild Goose video. Then I interviewed him. We were talking about being survivors of... Read more

Then again, if I only wanted to attend a church that was good, true and without error—according to my transitory ego-stoked beliefs—I’d have to invent my own religion. But wait a moment. There’d be a problem. I’d have to excommunicate the priest and his entire congregation! You see, I know that particular bishop/priest/congregation too well. With apologies to Groucho Marx: I’d never want to join a church that had someone like me for their founding bishop, especially if I was... Read more

Mom and Dad (Edith and Francis Schaeffer) in L’Abri 1979 “The very fabric of the universe is unknowable and stranger than we can imagine and has a message for us: climb down off that high atheist, religious or agnostic pedestal!” CHAPTER 4 FROM Frank Schaeffer‘s NEW BOOK is a writer-WHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD: How to give love, create beauty and find peace “The new book, ‘Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God,’ is [a] distillation of... Read more

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee’s actions of late remind me of Season 6 of The Sopranos. Huckabee is like some Mafia thug, actually worse. Tony Soprano never pretended to know Jesus to justify his killings. Huckabee used quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” to justify vile death-producing discrimination against gays and lesbians. His statement (at the June 19 March for Marriage rally in Washington D.C.) was against state judges who have legalized gay marriage and he urged... Read more

I’d been writing novels and literary nonfiction for twenty years before I dared to write a memoir about my flight from my evangelical past. That book became the bestselling CRAZY FOR GOD: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back. I’d been so out of touch with the evangelical world that I’d lost track of the players. Put it this way: I’d never... Read more

My Marine son volunteered to serve when President Clinton was still in office. Clinton’s greatest sin was getting a blow job in the Oval Office. The next guy kept his pants zipped but fucked the world. Then he tried to kill my son. We were not at war in 1999, when my son volunteered right out of high school to serve his country. I even wrote a book about learning to become a marine’s dad that became a New York... Read more

Atheist or believer? Frank Schaeffer is a bit of both By Kimberly Winston  Show caption Frank Schaeffer’s new book, “Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God,” explores love, loss and the author’s journey to finding peace. As anyone who has been reading my HuffPost blogs knows I’m “of the left.” So I understand the impulse to regard corporations as bad and giant companies as downright evil. Enter the Amazon takeover of the world and destruction of all that is right and holy in publishing. Only there is another side to all this that I — as a mid-level author of more than a dozen books and several best-sellers — would like to offer. I love Amazon... Read more
