Fr. Dwight Longenecker has cracked the code:

I have been trying very hard to figure out how the new Pope fulfills the prophecy of St Malachy about “Peter the Roman” and I think I’ve got it. They say he is from Argentina, but his family really came from Italy in the first place and Rome is the capital of Italy so that means he is really Roman even though he comes from Argentina and “Argentina” gets its name from the Latin word for silver which is “Argent” and silver is a mineral which is found in rocks and Peter means “Rock” so because he is from Argentina he is Peter. See it all fits! The Malachy prophecies are real!

It is as Nostradamus foretold!

Actually, it’s more simple than that.

Pope Francis will be buried in Rome after he dies and the prophecy will be seen to be true four thousand years later.
After all, what do you call a man who has been buried for four thousand years?

      Oh dear.

    • James H, London

      Groan chorus. That was awful.

You do the Malarkey prophecies proud.

      wait ……. I don’t get it ……… OH! Nevermind

Actually, the Pope ripped on this first. He literally said in his intro speech that the cardinals went “to the end of the world.” And yep, that’s a pretty good pun for the first moment.

Another interpretation: In chosing Francis for his Papal name, this Pope is the first Pope to have chosen an original name (disregrading John Paul i and II because there have been a lot of Popes John and Paul) since Pope Romanus became Pope in August 897. Before his election Pope Romanus was the cardinal of St. Peter ad Vincula in Rome( Catholic Encyclopedia ): Hence *(tarnataraaaaaaaaaaaaaaa) “PETRUS ROMANUS” (That the entire reference relates to another Popeman who lived well before Malachy was even born and even longer before the Prophecies were published is neither here nor there)
