Homeland Security Seizes Fake NFL Merch

You may wonder “How is fake NFL merch a Homeland Security issue?”

Ah! But you fail to grasp the evolving view of our Ruling Class on what is “terror” and who the enemy is. Once you declare that “the battlefield is everywhere” and you adopt an elastic enough view that “terror” means “crime” and “crime” means “anything that sufficiently irritates our monied class and their incestuous lovers in the State” much becomes clear. “Homeland security” stops being about the pretense of keeping you safe from The Terrorists[TM] and becomes, increasingly, a massive new police force for the purpose of treating anybody it likes as part of the great bogey network of The Terrorists[TM].

Homeland security runs Customs and Border Protection. Fake merchandise is absolutely a Customs issue.

That doesn’t mean that disproportionate allocation of resources to stopping knockoff NFL stuff is wise, but it really does fall under DHS jurisdiction.

The Department of Homeland Security was created by transferring a lot of agencies from other departments to the new DHS. This means that the new department had responsibility for *all* the functions of the transferred agencies, not just those dealing strictly with homeland security. So when the Customs Bureau was transferred from Treasury to Homeland Security, that meant that the latter inherited Treasury’s responsibility for policing the importation, not just of such exciting things as caches of weapons, but also of such mundane things as counterfeit goods. (Similarly, the transfer of the United States Secret Service from Treasury to Homeland Security now means that Homeland Security is now policing credit card fraud and Nigerian e-mail scams.)

I’m assuming DHS used their armored-up Goon Squad SWAT team delivered by a surplus tank to execute the bust.

The Coast Guard was also transferred from the Treasury to Homeland Security. Can we now expect indignant posts demanding why DHS is involved in maritime safety, etc.?
