Watching the Vote Come In

Watching the Vote Come In January 19, 2010

Well, I have my fingers crossed, and my toes; but I fear the worst over the line in Massachusetts.

I, for one, do believe in polls, particularly trending polls. I hope for the machine to get in gear and deliver some votes. And at least one really good observer of our American political scene gives her a slender but fighting chance. I also take comfort in my notoriously bad past political prognostication…

But, I just think it won’t be enough, and likely Ted Kennedy’s seat (yeah, yeah, it’s not a “Kennedy” seat, it’s the people’s seat…) is going to fall into Republican hands.

I see the President and Speaker Pelosi are saying no matter how the vote goes, health care isn’t dead. And I hope they’re right.

I have little respect for Attorney General Coakley. But I want her vote for health care. I’m completely flabbergasted by those of our political left who seem to think because single payer or even a public option is beyond reach in our current political environment, what can be done isn’t worth going for.

The rhetoric about the health care program being nothing but a way to force more people to have insurance is mind spinning. Yeah. That’s the idea. And in a nation that won’t support a national plan, that’s how it works. It’s the only way it works.

You take what you can, then come back later for the rest. In this case get the widest possible access to health care. Then, later, come back and address costs…

This isn’t rocket science.

It’s the art of the possible.

As I review this posting, I guess I’m in a bad mood. (And, no, I don’t think people who disagree with me on this are stupid. At least not most. But, cut me some slack. I really believe this is bad, bad for America, and being negatively sold as costing those with money to help those without to get health care is bad for our souls…)

Bad mood happens once in a while.

And, really, I know it could be worse…

It can pretty much always be worse…
