My Bid to Take Over All Social Media – Periscope

As Salaamu Alaikum and hello all!  Well, just when I thought I was all caught up with my social media presence, the Interwebs goes ahead and invents something new!  About four months ago, Twitter created a new app called Periscope.  It is a live-streaming app that allows you to just say hello to the world on the spur of the moment.  ‘Scopes can range from the trivial – “I’m Bored, Ask Me Anything” – to the educational.  And of course you have to be careful not to stumble upon anything inappropriate.  I have noticed that people in Seattle tend to ‘Scope about doing stuff while smoking pot.  It’s like “Ha ha, it’s legal here, ya jealous?”.

Of course, my objective is to educate people about Islam.  So far I have done about five or six ‘Scopes, and only with the last one did I remember to save the broadcast to my camera roll so I could upload it to YouTube.  Because, you see, ‘Scopes disappear after 24 hours.  If you are not able to save it, POOF!  It’s gone.

Being technically unsavvy, I have to learn things the hard way, but I think I have finally figured it out.  I am going to post a link to my latest broadcast here and I welcome you to take a look-see.

Right now I’m just going off the top of my head and answering questions, so the broadcast might be a bit stream-of-consciousness and disorganized due to the back and forth nature of having a live audience asking questions, but inshaAllah as I go I will make each ‘Scope more or less stick to a particular topic.

Now, if you watch or if you participate, you may notice that sometimes the non-Muslim questioners can be a bit aggressive or not appear to be asking respectful  questions, so I just ask you to be patient and not rise to the bait if someone is being rude.  If someone is becoming abusive or profane, I will block him or her at my discretion.  But if someone asks a question, even in a less than polite manner, I will do my best to answer, even the “hot button” ones.  You never know which question and answer will provoke an “aha” moment.
