The Benevolent Dictator – No, Not Kim Jung Il, ME

As Salaamu Alaikum and good morning all.  It's about 9 am here in Virginia.  Kids are off to school, smaller ones are ensconced in front of the TV watching cartoons.  The cats are milling about hoping someone drops a frosted flake on the floor.  I am here this morning to confess to being a really disorganized person.   It affects all areas of my life.  I start something, forget what I was doing, go back later and have to start again.  I do it with this blog, too.  Sometimes I'll post more than on … [Read more...]

Sometimes, a Cucumber is Just a Cucumber

I don't get out much.  Happens when you're a work-at-home mom of five children, three cats, and one Egyptian hubby who loves my home cooked food.  Much of the information I get about the 'outside world' comes from TV and my Facebook feed.  A few days ago my wall started lighting up with stories about a sheikh - still unidentified and possibly imaginary - who supposedly said that female Muslims should not be allowed to handle cucumbers, zucchini, or other phallic produce.  It was one of those sou … [Read more...]

Okay, I confess, we ARE trying to take over the world

Once again Islam is in the news as a major kerfluffle is underway due to Lowe's decision to pull advertising from the TLC reality show "All-American Muslim".  Islamophobes opine about creeping sharia law, while Muslims try to reassure them that, no, we don't want sharia, we are perfectly content with American law and we are fully integrated in society.  Well, time for me to confess.  For religious Muslims, that's a load of horse hockey.  We want sharia law.  We want Islamic law to be the law of t … [Read more...]

My All American Muslim Family. Too Boring for TLC

As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.Work piled up on my desk (and on the floor, and in the closet, and out in the storage shed), a house full of sniffling, dry hacking, post-nasal-dripping children, more scandalous news than you can shake a stick at, and still I can't think of what to write about.  An amusing anecdote about the children?  My ire at Lowe's pulling commercials from "All-American Muslim"?  Joy over having plenty of coffee in the house?  My brain is full but all my thoughts are tum … [Read more...]

What happened to that sister I used to know?

As Salaamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you)Okay, this next bit that I just wrote I really hesitated to post.  It's a fictionalized account of one side of a telephone conversation about a Muslim named Aisha.  I want to say beforehand that I know there are many many good Muslim marriages, and there are wonderful cross-cultural marriages (such as my own) where the husband and wife are loving, dynamic, confident about themselves, and who tackle the world as a team.  That being said, there seem to be a … [Read more...]

So, how may people threw rocks at you today?

As Salaamu Alaikum wa RahmatullahThis is a message specifically to my brothers and sisters in Islam:Sometimes we run short of patience.  It's normal.  We are, after all, only  human.  But we are also Muslim, so we are held to a higher standard.  We are supposed to the upright Ummah, the nation, not of borders and ethnic lines, but of belief and behavior.  We believe in One God.  We behave like role models for mankind. Why, then, do I so often hear my Muslim brothers and siste … [Read more...]

Thank you, Aliaa Elmehdy, for showing us what freedom is

Salaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI read a news article this weekend about an Egyptian feminist blogger named Aliaa Elmehdy, who in a controversial move uploaded a nude picture online in order to express her freedom after the revolution in Egypt.  Her move was met with condemnation by Muslims all over the world, but for myself, I have a different view.I for one would like to give a hearty "thank you" to Aliaa Elmehdy for showing all us ignorant repressed women what freedom is really all … [Read more...]

The True Beauty of a Woman? My Idea is Different from Hers

Salaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahTwo things hit my Facebook feed today that I felt compelled to comment on.  One was a bit of prose by a Muslim sister of mine.  I'll post it here and then comment on it:THE BEAUTY OF A WOMAN :The beauty of a woman lies IN HER SILENCE rather than her speech The beauty of a woman lies IN HER VEIL rather than her face The beauty of a woman lies IN HER SUBMISSION rather that her leadership The beauty of a woman lies IN HER SMILE rather than her l … [Read more...]

The Second Half of the First Day of Eid

Salaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahWell, I am happy to report that the second half of our first day of Eid went very well, so we managed to string together a really good day, alhamdulillah. We relaxed at home for a while and then piled everyone in the car to head to the park. First hiccup in the day; hubby had misread his email and we weren't supposed to have a day at the "park" but rather a day at a place called Funland in a shopping center named "Central Park". Well, there was a park in there … [Read more...]

In the Midst of the Eid

Salaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahWell, it's about 2 pm on the first day of Eid.  Children have been dressed, hustled into their carseats, unloaded, shepherded to the Eid hall, given candy, shushed, given more candy, chased around the hall, had pictures taken, been told "mashaAllah" a hundred times, loaded back into the van, driven home, fed a huge pancake and french toast breakfast, changed into play clothes, and given their Eid loot.  Things are quiet at the moment.  The kids are playing qu … [Read more...]
