Starting an Advice Page on Facebook

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahWell, I went and did it.  I started a page on Facebook for offering Islamic advice.  I hemmed and hawed and went back and forth in my mind about it.  Who am I, after all, to offer advice?  I'm just your basic Muslim housewife living in the 'burbs, trying to take care of my family and not burn the cookies.  Why should I open my piehole and tell people how to live their lives?Well, in a real sense I've actually been … [Read more...]

An Islamic Love Story: A Mango for a Bride

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahThis is a story I wrote several years ago.  Every so often I get nostalgic and go back and read it.  I thought I would share it with you:A Mango for a BrideByNancy ShehataMy father’s house was in a greater state of uproar than usual, and since there were six of us children - well, we’re all grown now, but when we’re home, we’re no longer truly adults - six of us and our families spending a great amount of time in the house, the level … [Read more...]

God is Not Linear

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim Salaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI am a revert to Islam.  Over the years, people have asked me hundreds of times why I converted to Islam.  Did I covert to please a husband?  No.  Did I convert after hearing a particularly moving sermon?  No.  I converted out of conviction after studying Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.Perhaps it's the German in me, but I appreciate the logical consistency of Islam.  Since the creation of the first … [Read more...]

On 9/11, Millions of Americans will NOT Be Burning the Qur’an

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahThis just in to INN - the Inane News Network.    After tireless research and many hours in the field, your intrepid reporter has determined that thousands, no, millions, no hundreds  of millions of Americans will NOT, I repeat, will NOT be burning the Qur'an on Saturday, the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  On that day, millions of Americans will not gather at two-bit "churches" and engage in inflammatory rhetoric … [Read more...]

Qur’an-fire of the Vanities

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahWell, we're approaching zero-hour on the  Qur'an-burning kerfluffle.  This whole situation is a prime example of what happens when the media gets ahold of a story and turns it into, well, a kerfluffle (a polite word for a major hoo-haw).  Here's this tiny little church, whose name, Dove World Outreach Center, almost has more letters than the church has congregants, causing protests as far away as Kabul, Afghanistan and Malaysia. … [Read more...]

Angry on a Sunday Morning

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI actually got a decent amount of sleep last night, alhamdulillah.  I'm not doing much today, bit of laundry.  Have grocery shopping to do.For some reason I woke up mad.  Just angry, grumpy, don't-anyone-mess-with-me mad.  Trying not to be short with the kids but I have low tolerance right now for any temper tantrums.  I'm "touch fatigued" as well.  Too much time with baby on my shoulder and toddler on my lap. … [Read more...]

Misyar marriage… what is it, and is it like muta’ah?

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahThere was a comment on my FB wall by someone that I wanted to clarify.  There was a comparison between misyar  marriage mut'ah marriage.  What are these terms?  I'll deal with the second one first.Okay, mut'ah is basically temporary marriage.  A man and a woman contract this "marriage" for a set period of time, an hour, a day, a year.  He gives her some sort of gift and then they are considered married for … [Read more...]

Wednesday With a Sick Kid

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahMy five year old is home sick from school today.  He's so upset to be missing class.  I guess he got a back to school virus.  Tylenol is doing the job for now, which is great, because his fever was 104.5 last night.  Anytime it's that high you get a little nervous. Yesterday was an okay day but I had a rough spot.  After doing some work and baking pita bread, separating up the cooked fuul into ziploc bags to freeze, I … [Read more...]

A Productive Monday, alhamdulillah

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahAlhamdulillah, had a pretty productive day today.  Got some work done and housework as well.  Cooked up a big pot of fuul so I can portion it out and freeze it.  Then I can thaw what I need each day, along with the ta'mayah I did yesterday.  Still have to make pita bread but there's only so much I can do in one day.I saw a story on ESPN today that was a real tear-jerker.  It's from a program called "Outside the Lines" … [Read more...]
