Think about this for a minute. Two nuclear powers are involved in a violent and serious conflict that could quickly spiral out of control and two of our leading news organizations, CNN and Fox News, lead with talk of an obscure beauty queen and a comedian. These are very sad and troubling times for our world.

The United States and Russia are involved in an incredibly violent proxy war in Syria. Diplomatic relations between United States and Russia remind many long-term observers of  the dark days of the Cold War. A time when children hid under school desks because nuclear war was a real possibility.

The conflict in Syria is, to some degree, complicated but put simply: the United States is backing rebels who want regime change. Russia supports the ruling party. What is not complicated is that women and children are dying in Syria in the most horrific conditions. What is also not  complicated  but utterly ignored by our media is Russia takes the hostilities in the Middle East extremely seriously. Russia is at war in Syria.  Inconceivably, the American people and particularly our media have not grasped this very important truth. Suddenly American officials are now calling Russia’s aggressive actions in Syria as “Barbaric”. Russia, on the other hand, reminds those who care to listen that they are indeed at war.

kelly-cooper-300x197Maybe now and then, if good video is available, CNN and Fox News will run a short story of the bloody conflict. But the stores are like local news bits about rescue dogs. You’ve seen them; stories about abused Pitt Bulls locked away in filthy cages.

We are outraged at the inhumanity. But only for a moment. But the story of Syria is not about sad and abused animals it is about human beings, it’s about the suffering of  women and children.  The iconic example of the violence is the bleeding boy from Syria in an ambulance.

But the truth is for Fox News and CNN,  the boy is nothing more than a sad puppy dog that the TV producers put on the air for a  brief moment before they move on. Good visuals, good TV. But reporting on the causes of  the war or putting the candidates feet to the fire and demanding that they give the American people honest and detailed proposals on what to do with Russia and how to manage the greatest humanitarian crisis on earth seems beyond our major news organizations ability. Here we have two major nuclear powers locked in  a furious struggle and CNN and Fox News can’t be bothered  with it.

CNN and Fox News spent most of today’s  evening broadcast talking about sex tapes and Ms Universe. For good measure discussion of  insults directed at  Rosie O’Donnell  were also thrown into the mix.

Think about this for a minute. Two nuclear powers are involved in a violent and serious conflict that could quickly spiral out of control and CNN is leading the news with talk of an obscure beauty queen and a comedian. These are very sad and troubling times for our world.

We seriously need to ask ourselves if big media is truly fit to cover the presidential election.
