Illustration Friday: “artificial”

There really is no rational explanation for this picture. I spent hours on it. The original measures 4″x6″ (10cm x 15cm). It is done with pen and ink and graphite pencil on Strathmore watercolor paper. It’s my submission to this week’s Illustration Friday contest entitled “artificial” (the artificial teddy bear facing the very real grizzly). However, the official title of the work is “fearless”. The image emerged from the depths of my unconscious. She certainly is fearless.

I think “Fearless” is the exact right name. There is nothing artificial about this child’s courage. After all, isn’t courage a matter of being brave when we are facing something we are truely afraid of? The outcome does not really matter, it is the act of courage in facing fear head-on that makes one fearless, not whether they won the battle or not. The real grizzly she is facing down is the one inside herself, and it is fear. I very much like everything about this except the title–for me.

  • thanks lori anne. “fearless” it is!!

I really, really like this. “Even though I stand in the shadow of the bear, I shall fear no evil …”

David – I love this image! It has the spooky but integral quality of the deepest and most profound human stories : facing fear, facing ourselves, facing our own weakness and finding strength in it. Beautiful and thoughtful…..

  • I adore this drawing. To me, it is the manifestation of the wee saying that courage is fear that’s been prayed over.

I also really liked the sketch of you from the photo your wife took years ago. Deep, serene, peaceful to me.
