new Sophia drawing: “Suspended”

I’m quite attached to Sophia, as I know many of you also are. She surely represents my soul. She is courageous, vulnerable and independent. She continues on her journey to learn how to be true to herself before she can commit again. She is wonderful. I admire her. Especially her tenacity. But she also needs to sleep:

It is drawn with pen and ink, watercolor and graphite pencil on Arches 300 lb hotpress acid free paper, measuring 8″x10″ (20cm x 25cm)

resting between a dead and a living tree and with the moon so huge it’s like daylight – Will the dead tree hold her up while she sleeps? Can she sleep with so much light? At least she’s off the ground above the wolves. Such is the journey of the soul

My soul too, tries to find peace between the past and the future. The tree on the left represents the old dying away memories that haunted me for so long, as I replayed them over and over in my head until I became them, until they consumed me. The tree on the right is my Hope, my future, my new memories to erase the old.
I can only rest between them, when I surrender and trust, knowing there is a better way and it’s not my way, but that God knows what is best for me and I want it. I need it. I surrender to it. It has Never let me down. I now, know, no better way.
At last the peace I seek… (don’t we all?)

The trees look like lodge pole pines. Their cones will open and release seed only when exposed to a temperature of 133 degrees(F) – such as found in a forest fire.

The dead tree has died in the worst possible way – it has not generated new trees, it has no legacy.

The live tree still has hope of eduring fire – not as a test or a punishment, as an act of transformation and new life.

Growth is change and change is not always easy or pleasant. If life is not changing, it is not growing and if life is not growning, it is dying.

What kind of fire will Sophia endure? Will she find transformation? Will she find new life? Has Sophia stopped growing?

After commenting on twitter about naked Sophia hopefully not being in a string hammock, this picture will always hold a special significance for me. And I think David & Doug’s comments make it even more special. Thank you.

AMEN!!! The Voyage of Discovery lies not in the type or direction of the vessel but the experiencing the journey with the crew! The ebb and flow of their lives intertwined with ours creates the tides of our daily life and the shared experiences drive the winds that steer us homeward.
