I think there are plenty of people (claiming to follow Jesus) who are offensive…most people don’t even know what Jesus taught, so they can’t possibly be offended by him.

  • Mad =^..^= (AKA ccws)

Then there are those who are offended precisely because they DO know what Jesus taught – all that “love your neighbor as yourself” and “whatever you do to the least of these, you do to me” stuff – and proceed to ignore it because, as one commenter said recently, “we’re not willing to do all those things anyway…”

I think that even the various authors in the Christian Bible used Jesus in different ways. So it is no surprise that modern Christians do so too. [Same goes for any religion, of course]

An “offensive”, radical Jesus who encourages deep love and care for the poor is only one of the several NT Jesuses, I think. So whether it is as a “cornerstone” or a “stepping stone” — there are lots of Jesuses to pick from

People will try to tell you which type of stone is the right one. They will justify that pick by telling you the Bible is homogenous and only tells of one real Jesus.

Again, this phenomena is seen in every religion. Recognizing it, we can seek “spiritual independence”, but ironically, the independent folks occasionally try to tell us that their independent version is the real version too.

    It never ends.

Most people are pretty offended when I quote John 14:6 and tell people I believe it.
