One of my favorite verses in the bible is Psalm 42:7…

“Deep calls to deep at the sound of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have rolled over me.”

Sophia, like all of us, is always invited to go deeper. But because of all her trials, she feels she has no choice. The mystical creatures, the loons, provide wise guidance, sleek assurance and a deep safety for her. The creatures of the deep rescue her.

I remember meeting a loon while I was out in the middle of a lake on a windsurfing board. The loon swam close to me, then dove under and passed just beneath my feet that were dangling in the water. It was huge! It startled me. I felt in touch with another world I did not understand. A deep, mythical world. Spiritual.

These are Sophia’s companions. They symbolize depth. Their cries symbolize sorrow. But they also symbolize faithfulness. Sophia knows depth. She’s acquainted with sorrow. But Sophia will be faithful. First and foremost to herself.

I believe that shallowness [simplistic convictions and the behaviors they cause] is behind more of the unnecessary pain we inflict on others than malice.

Some people believe that God is always consciously encountered in the deeps, never in the shallows.

I was very touched by that. Thank you David.

This drawing speaks to me David! Snowy white egrets have been the particular sign of the Spirit for me … they have guided, comforted, delighted and assured me on more than one occasion …. When i moved from the Bay Area to Denver, and found myself walking through the park near my new home wondering if i had made the right move, a snowy white egret flew into sight as if to say, yes, i am here too!
