Ya I pick on pastors a lot. Bad ones. Never good ones. And there are good ones.

Ya I pick on churches a lot. Bad ones. Never good ones. And there are good ones.

Here’s a good pastor who could never find a good church.

Or is it a bad pastor who kept getting good churches and didn’t recognize it?

Or does he not know the definition of good?

Or has he always been a bitter old coot?

Steve Livermore was the best pastor I’ve ever had…and I was just a kid at the time. He made youth group fun. He visited my family outside if church. It wasn’t the perfect church, and he had two others to take care of but I think he might have stayed if it wasn’t for the Methodist practice of moving their pastors around. :(

I like this cartoon and the one about Jesus wanting to go to earth as a girl. I just found your site from a colleague Jenn Munroe Nathans. Thanks for making me think and laugh. Peace.

I believe the practice of “moving pastors around” is to keep the clergy and laity from becoming too co-dependent. It also prevents a pro-pastor clique from becoming a permanent feature in the local church.

“Innumerable times a whole Christian community has broken down because it has sprung from a wish dream. The serious Christian, set down for the first time in a Christian community, is likely to bring with him a very definite idea of what Christian life together should be and try to realize it.  But God’s grace speedily shatters such dreams.  Just as surely as God desires to lead us to a knowledge of genuine Christian fellowship, so surely must we be overwhelmed by a great disillusionment with others, with Christians in general, and, if we are fortunate, with ourselves.”  Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together

The point of the spiritual life is not our personal private holiness but rather opening our selves so that the life of God can pour out on the community. ~ Maggie Ross

“Community is that place where the person you least want to live with always lives. And when that person moves away, someone else arises to take his or her place.” ~ Parker J. Palmer

I’ll go against what I have said before and make a comment here. Yeas , I agree there are good pastors, there are good Christians and good men too that are not pastors. I am glad to see that being acknowledged. There are bad people who are not men, pastors and Christians and I would like to see that acklownledged more. Still, there are double standards in society when it comes to laying down the blame for wrong doing and that is the reality, just as there are groups that suffer more then others for societies ills.

I think the cartoon and the pastor depends on the individual. It can’t be true for all pastors in that situation that they are alll good and have just been mistreated. It can’t be true that for all pastors that are in that sutuation that they are grumpy old farts that don’t get along with anybody.

It surely would depend would it not on what the pastor has learned about themslef (male or female) and whether they have taken such lessons and applied them or repeated mistakes and instead of looking to themselves, the common demonimator in the communities he had left, be blaoming others and becomgin cynical and bitter in the process. “We all know, people are the same wherever you go, there is good an bad in everyone, when we learn to live, we learnt to give each other what we need to survive, together alive” Wonder & McArtney Ebony and Ivory.
