from Jesus to Joel Osteen

nailed it from jesus to joel osteen cartoon by nakedpastor david hayward

Joel Osteen says some good things. He does some good things too.

I’m not into the argument that we should copy the way Jesus taught or that the church needs to return to its most primitive state.

Matters of style are secondary. They are important because the medium is the message. But they are secondary. The content will shape its presentation.

What Osteen and similar ministries communicate is positivity, success, prosperity, and hope, wrapped in a charismatic theology and style.

What the story of Jesus communicates is love, freedom, and peace that is transformative, courageous, radical, insubordinate, rebellious, alternative, universal.

Let’s see more people nailing that!

In my search for the truth, I oft note that some people seem to worship the human author of ‘spiritual ” statements, by excessive use of their reference thereto. This begs the question from me as to WHO is being worshiped here.

  • Well, Chester, it’s certainly not David Hayward!

  • By their very definition, messages that are “radical, insubordinate, rebellious, alternative…” have to be conveyed in multiple ways.

If we try to conform a message like that to a single delivery method, we have to neuter it first!

  • With these mega churches, it all about the hive brain. The energy of all these people together creates a psychology that goes beyond whatever subject matter is being discussed. The same thing can happen at large political rallies and rock concerts. Mega churches just tap into that same feeling and act like it is the Holy Spirit flowing through everybody.

You left out a few. Osteen also teaches relationship, obedience, mercy and forgiveness.

Insubordinate, rebellious… Jesus criticized the Pharisees frequently for their hypocrisy. And indeed, he violated some of their more pious customs regarding the washing and the Sabbath. But I recall one puzzling thing He said about people rebelling against them:

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach'” – Matthew 23:1-3
