What does it mean to truly be happy? Is happiness an attainable experience for us in this life, or is it one of many trivial pursuits that continually leave us wanting? These questions lie at the heart of Oprah and Deepak Chopra’s new 21-Day Meditation Experience, Expanding Your Happiness, which launches today. It is the sixth experience that Oprah and Deepak have teamed up to create and like the other five, this one does not disappoint.
It is well attested that humanity is on the brink of a spiritual revolution- a global shift of consciousness that is causing us to collectively seek out the answers to the age-old questions that religion has sought to contain over the centuries. One major component of this shift is a move away from traditional religious institutions with their dogmas and hierarchies to a more integrated, inter-faith spirituality that seeks to tap in to the common spiritual truths that lie at the heart of all of the world’s religions in order to cultivate the abundant life that humans were created to experience. As this shift has been developing, Oprah and Deepak Chopra have risen as curators and innovators of a new kind of spirituality that is connecting people from every corner of the earth through a common spiritual practice–meditation.
Nearly every religious tradition has some form of meditation at the heart of its practice and discipline. As a Christian, I have always been intrigued by the various monastic meditation traditions that have been at the core of Christian spirituality since the days of the Apostles. As I have experimented with the many varying forms of mediation in my own tradition and in other religious traditions, I have found that it is by far the most beneficial spiritual practice in my spiritual life. The benefits are many–from increased awareness and deep centering to a greater sense of interconnectivity to all of creation. As a Christian, meditation has helped me to listen to the voice of God more regularly and encounter that still, small voice that lies just beyond the noise and distractions of my life.
But to be honest, meditating is really hard. It’s hard to carve out time to sit down, turn off your thinking, and disconnect from the outside world even for just ten minutes. It’s hard to remain disciplined and committed to a practice that is so counter to the way we live our lives every day. It is precisely this difficulty that has made me a huge fan of Oprah and Deepak’s Meditation Experiences. Each day for 21 days, new guided meditation experiences are delivered right to your inbox for you to listen to whenever you have 20 free minuets. There is also the realization that you are participating in the same meditation experience as thousands of others around the world who are signed up for it. These factors help me, personally, to stay motivated and accountable to setting aside time to meditate. As I listened to and meditated along with Oprah and Deepak’s 21 unique experiences, I was consistently amazed at how this dynamic duo led me in to a time of deep stillness and being and called forth a true sense of joy within my soul. Oprah introduces each meditation and prepares us for the internal journey that we are about to embark on together. Then, Deepak takes the baton and guides us gently into an awareness of the joy that already permeates our being. All of this takes about ten minutes and before you know it, the voices of our guides fade away and we are in a state of deep meditation.
I don’t mean to overstate my point, but Oprah and Deepak’s newest meditation experience, Expanding Your Happiness, is truly one of the most powerful meditation series I have ever participated in. Combining their expert wisdom and spiritual insights through guided meditation, they have created an experience that has the potential to shift you in to a more radiant and joy-filled life if you’re willing to give them a chance. I know many are skeptical about these sorts of “pop-spirituality” programs, but I assure you that this is not just another faux spirituality program but a deeply insightful, grounded, and thoughtful guided experience that has been expertly curated by two of the most influential spiritual leaders of our time. It is easily integratable into any already existing spiritual practices and is truly an inter-faith and inter-spiritual experience. Everyone should feel comfortable with the teaching and experience and everyone should sense a deeper connection to the Divine as a result of this resource.
So I encourage you, whoever you are, to give it a try. Carve out 20 minutes in your day to allow yourself to detach from the many cares of your day to day life and rediscover the joy that we all are so desperately longing for. What have you got to lose?
