In San Francisco at AAR/SBL

I’ve made it to San Francisco for the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature conferences. I got to my hotel at 2am local time. I’ve already reconnected with good friends, and am looking forward to the bibliobloggers’ dinner tonight!

Here’s the view from my hotel room:

Great to have you here. Great to catch up!

James, are there any informal Dunn gatherings taking place while we’re here?

  • James F. McGrath

I assume that the Dunnites will meet up at the Durham Reception, at the very least.

FYI, and maybe something to download and listen to on the flight home:

The BBC radio 4 program In Our Time has finally made all its episodes back to 1998 available for download as podcasts.

Here’s the page for the ‘religion’ category:

    For example:

The FallThu, 8 Apr 04Duration:29 minsMelvyn Bragg examines the concept of original sin and its influence in Christian Europe. With guests Martin Palmer, John Carey and Griselda Pollock.

Unlike many US radio shows, there are no callers, no station identification breaks, no commercials. It’s just a host and a few academics or experts, discussing the subject, following an outline more or less in order to cover the topic, rather than just having a free-ranging chat.

  • James F. McGrath

Thanks for sharing those! I’m actually listening to and watching episodes of Doctor Who when I travel by plane these days.

It’s a great show, I wish there was more like that over here. He has people on like Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal, and Diarmaid MacCulloch.

There used to be a show on WBEZ in Chicago, called Odyssey, which was similar, but with a young woman as host, and was a bit lighter, and had callers. They did one April Fool’s episode that had me fooled until one of the panelists argued that Picasso’s Guernica was actually about the terrible dental care of the village. One of the panelists was credited as:

“Glenn Mendler – Joseph Campbell chair of Mythology at Lucas College, and author of Chewbacca’s Purse: Androgyny and Sexual Dissonance in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”

      • Glenn

As the person who played Glenn Mendler, I very much enjoyed coming across this mention of that episode…

*swooon* It was awesome. It was worth being unemployed so I could be home to hear it.

Have you kept in touch with Gretchen?

          • Glenn

Yes: she is a lawyer now.
