In a way, his atheism was the perfect qualification. Starting with a Hindu leader would have infuriated Muslims and other religious minorities, and a Muslim president would have frosted the Hindus no end. An atheist with Nehru’s strong commitment to religious freedom was much less likely to play favorites.
