It should not be at all surprising that there are atheists in foxholes, but the insulting myth persists. In fact, more than 300,000 current US military personnel have no religious affiliation, and more than 11,000 identify specifically as atheists.
Silver Star recipient Corporal Patrick Tillman, an NFL linebacker who joined the Army after the attacks of September 11, 2001, was perhaps the highest profile “atheist in a foxhole” at the time of his death in action in April 2004.
