So, a human embryo is a human being. That makes sense!

Aimee, an eagle-eyed reader sent this good news to me, and I appreciate it. I’d somehow missed the story.

A frozen embryo destroyed in a Chicago fertility clinic was a human being whose parents are entitled to file a wrongful-death lawsuit, a Cook County judge ruled Friday.

Attorneys on both sides of the abortion issue said it was the first such ruling they had heard of as the country debates whether stem cells derived from embryos can be used in research and medicine.

Alison Miller and Todd Parrish hoped to conceive a child with help from the Center for Human Reproduction, but the one fertilized egg the couple created was thrown out “in error” by a clinic worker.

Friday, Judge Jeffrey Lawrence II said “a pre-embryo is a ‘human being’ … whether or not it is implanted in its mother’s womb” and the couple is entitled to seek the same compensation awarded to other parents whose children are killed.

This is something I have never understood – even back when I was a liberal, and mildly “pro-choice” (in that at the time I thought it better to leave Roe v Wade alone) I could never understand the mindset of those who could argue that a human embryo was anything less than human. It’s not a vegetable. It’s not wolvine. It’s human. It’s another side of humanity – possibly humanity in its purest form. It’s like humanity in another dimension. But it’s still, inarguably a BEING of the HUMAN variety. I’m glad this ruling came down as it did. It was wise.

The president said that we must change hearts on this issue. Perhaps, slowly, slowly…that is happening.
