It begins…

The internation assault on Christmas begins this year, not surprisingly, with the lights>

A COUNCIL is planning to scrap grants for festive lights because Christmas does not fit in with its “core values of equality and diversity”.

A report drawn up by the council in Suffolk concedes that the move could lead to officials being accused of “not supporting the spirit of Christmas”.

The move is the latest in a string of decisions by organisations to downplay the celebration of the birth of Christ — ostensibly to prevent offence being caused to non-Christian religions. Last week it emerged that Lambeth council in south London had insisted on renaming its Christmas lighting displays as “winter” or “celebrity” lights.

The latest is Conservative-controlled Waveney council in Lowestoft which provides grants totalling £10,000 for festive lights. Its report states that because Christmas focuses only on the Christian faith, continuing the funding would “not fit well with the council’s core values of equality and diversity”.

MusingMinds is (are?) on top of things – they found a second article, too: Row as Christmas Lights Renamed.

A decision to call Christmas lights “Winter Lights” in south London has been condemned as showing a “total lack of respect” for Christians.

Advertisements for the switch-on of the lights in multi-cultural Lambeth have renamed them, apparently for fear of offending other faiths.

Tory councillor Bernard Gentry told the BBC: “Christmas appears to have been cancelled in our borough”.

Gosh. Our Republicans couldn’t have bobbed and weaved any better.

Why is it ok to offend the majority of people? Wouldn’t one want to offend the last possible number? What makes minorities so special? The uniquely American idiocy of political correctness is infecting Europe too now…

    Here’s my gentle viewpoint:
If you don’t like to be in a country where almost everyone celebrates Christmas, go somewhere else !

But, it even affects our own. My ex girlfriend (#$^&#&$*#*&) who’s Catholic (despite that 666 mark :) ) also felt that wishing “Happy Holidays” would be better, so people celebrating Chhhhannukah would also be included. Inclusion! mgrrrr Include THIS :) That niceness fascism really ticks me off. It’s misdirected maternal instict, adopted by emasculated men.

    I’m still at a loss.

I fail to understand how recognizing those who celebrate Christmas is immoral. What is it about Christmas that offends so many people?

Seems to me most of the people doing the complaining have another agenda- If you aren’t a minority, you’re evil.

I think Christmas so offends because of the Incarnation – Emmanuel – God with us. Maybe some folks can’t bear the idea of a God so willing to humble himself, when they are so unwilling to humble themselves to anyone, any fellow failable human.

Hmmm…maybe something to write about, there.

While I do get disturbed by the snowballing tendency of public (and private) entitites to cave in to fears of offending certain groups, I really do think in our age that it might be better for cities and other secular authorities to get out of the business of celebrating religious holidays — not because it might offend non-belivers (as is the usual argument), but because their celebrating a bastardized/secularized version pandering to the lowest common denominator would offend believers.Instead, I would prefer that believers be given space to conduct celebrations in the public sphere which, because they are in private hands, can declare Christ’s nativity in an uncensored fashion rather than bowdlerizing it as “holiday” or “winter” or “winter solistice” etc. Of course God can even utilize the latter if it provokes observers to ask questions to the right people. Omnes gloriae dei.

The Left has been trying to rid the world of Christianity since its beginning. Only now do they have any success in Christian majority nations. The useful idiots keep obliging. Tolerence is allowing Muslim/Buddist/Shino/Hindu/Wiccan/Whatever celebrations to go on here. It’s not banning Christian holidays.

    Shinto, too.

On the one hand I really hate what they are doing, but on the other hand I hope that the end result is the link between Christmas and its crazy commercialization is broken.

There has to be a better way to celebrate Christmas that doesn’t include buying gifts. Of course, that’s easy for me to say because I’m a long way from childhood and have no children.

-I’ll point out here what I have said to you privately about the Piglet/Piggy Bank foolishness: there is no evidence whatever in this story that people of other faiths are asking anyone to stop celebrating Christmas, or calling it by name.
-Such hostility as exists toward Christmas is actually in the minds of the people who make these decisions, concealed from themselves by the projective fantasy of “offending others”.
-You are on the right track, I think, with this intuition about this being hostility to the Incarnation.
-And this hostility is actually located in the minds of the secular and the anti-religious, whatever their political persuasion, not because they have a different religious belief, but because they have no religious beliefs, and can have no comfort with hearing the footsteps of Death behind them.
