Bringing Home the Tofu and Stir-Frying it Up in a Pan?

Being a woman used to be defined as “bringing home the bacon and frying it up in a pan.”  (Not to mention the part about not ever letting our husband forget he’s a man.)  Perhaps the more modern definition of womanhood might replace frying up the bacon in a pan with choosing whole, fresh, natural, organic, local, seasonal, unrefined and unprocessed foods to serve to your family before homework and a reasonable bedtime.

Real woman know, however, life rarely lives up to your aspirations and expectations.  While we’re no longer attempting to vacuum while wearing heels like June Cleaver, we do still struggle with knowing how to balance all of life’s moving parts. Even with our more modern sensibilities, we sometimes expect ourselves to accomplish more than June.  While other times we’re so lax, we’re more akin to the television woman embodied in Roseanne.

Let’s face it. In a world filled with politics, work, pilates, and soccer, it’s remarkably hard to remember what’s really important in life.  It’s also hard to view our role in society, the family, and the workplace with the right contextual understanding.  Especially with so many people defining womanhood as what we aren’t or what we can never be.

Our new “What She Said” blog exists – both to our readers and to ourselves — to slow down and think about what we’re doing… instead of simply trying to complete the next thing to on the to-do list. Sometimes these musings might come from reading “Goodnight Moon” for the fifty millionth time, sometimes they’ll come during rush hour. Some of our contributors are moms and others are not.  We live alone, with roommates or in all kinds of families in different parts of the world.  Some of us earn a paycheck, others stay home with the kids and some manage both.  We are deeply faithful, apathetic toward religion or fall somewhere in between.  Despite the differences, we’re bound by the fact we’re all thoughtful women navigating and juggling the current complicated issues of the world.
