Here’s a bunch of stuff that didn’t make it onto the blog today, but which caught my eye anyway. The NYT editorial board published an op-ed on Trump’s tendency to breathe strength into conspiracy theories: Mr. Trump has seized on the charge that Hillary Clinton plans to win by cheating. He has said it before, but he keeps on saying it. This looks like pre-emptive face-saving, of course — getting an excuse ready if he loses badly. But it’s worse... Read more

Matt Staver gave a talk in Pennsylvania in April, the video for which has come to light now, in which he said that Obergefell didn’t count.  Why?  Because his religion says otherwise. Staver takes it a step further, suggesting civil unrest is necessary to get their way: “We are coming to a place, ladies and gentlemen, where we have to make a decision,” said Staver, who represented Kentucky clerk Kim Davis in her war against the Supreme Court’s marriage quality... Read more

So…Sean Hannity has been advising Donald Trump: Hannity’s support for Trump has gone beyond fueling rumors that Hillary Clinton is hiding a secret illness and inviting the Republican nominee on air for frequent softball interviews, however. According to to a New York Times report out Monday, the Fox host has for months served as an adviser to Trump, calling him with suggestions on strategy and messaging during critical moments for the campaign. The Times’ Jim Rutenberg reported that three sources... Read more

A Wisconsin Senator, Ron Johnson, has a new idea to cut costs on education: make students watch documentaries: U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (at right), a Wisconsin Republican in a tough re-election battle against Democrat Russ Feingold, used an appearance on Thursday to say the “higher education cartel” is raising prices and preventing reforms that would help college students learn at affordable prices. … “We’ve got the internet — you have so much information available. Why do you have to keep... Read more

Last week the governor of Louisiana told Donald Trump to stay away from the state so that resources weren’t diverted from recovery efforts from recent flooding.  Trump ignored him to show up and help unload some supplies for literally less than a minute before leaving. Now, to be fair, the media is actually being a bit unfair to Trump here.  Trump actually donated an 18-wheeler full of relevant supplies: Play-Doh, diapers, baby formula, various toys, cleaning supplies and socks can... Read more

For those unfamiliar with ol’ Flip, he was the guy who lost his mind in a garbled tirade about the Charlotte trans-friendly bathroom bill.  Here he is trying to disrupt the Charlotte pride parade yesterday: Not much to say here but this: play this video in 50 years for all the Christians who are trying to give Jesus the credit for LGBT equality.  While some religious people are coming around, it’s plain to see where virtually 100% the animosity toward... Read more

So, we all agree that child abuse and neglect is bad and, like many bad things, we have laws in place in order to prevent.  However, for some things we rightly consider abuse, in many states there are laws which declare they’re suddenly not abuse if done for religious reasons, as Pew outlines: All states prosecute parents whose children come to severe harm through neglect. But in 34 states (as well as the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico), there are... Read more

I teach private voice lessons at a small high school in east-central Kansas.  The two teachers who run the theater program there work tightly with me, which allows me to use the school building to teach. It also makes me acutely aware of what Gov. Sam Brownback has done to the economy.  Brownback’s economic policies have all-but-bankrupted the state.  Some Kansas schools had to close early simply because there wasn’t enough money to keep them open.  Then there was trepidation... Read more
