Sam Brownback has signed a bill that will reduce the amount of time families can be on welfare: SB 402 will reduce the time frame a family can receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to 24 months from 36 months, unless a family gets a hardship exemption. Mississippi, like a few other mostly Southern states, has passed a “religious freedom” bill which is really just a “let religious people slide around discrimination laws” bill. But Mississippi’s is different in a very relevant way: it stipulates that religious freedom, in this case, only applies to same-sex marriage, sex outside of marriage, and that gender is determined at birth. Like they do every year, Congress is working on passing the National Defense Authorization Act. According to Wikipedia, “the authorization bill determines the agencies responsible for defense, establishes funding levels, and sets the policies under which money will be spent.” It’s pretty straight forward.
