A few weeks ago I wrote about West Virginia’s House passing a Religious Freedom Restoration Act (which, we all know, is code for a bill permitting discriminating against gay people). Indiana’s attempt to reframe legal discrimination against gay people as “protecting religious liberty” cost the state more than $60 million.  West Virginia doesn’t have a tourist hub like Indianapolis to suffer for the legislatures hostility to potential visitors, but if history is an indicator this type of legislation will… 1.... Read more

One of my absolutely favorite organizations is Camp Quest.  The organization is well-run and it’s one of the best causes around: helping kids, including atheist kids, to feel comfortable in their own skin while many of their peers are away at church camp. Every year Sarah Hargreaves of Camp Quest KC uses her birthday as a fund-raiser.  Again, she’s matched up against David Diskin. But man, David is cleaning her clock this year: Another year, another birthday! I’m turning 32-years-old... Read more

My father sent me his take on the folks who, if HRC wins the nomination, are planning to either stay home or write in Bernie. If you think Bernie is that smart and wonderful, here are a couple of things he said to which you might want to pay a little heed: From the MSNBC debate: “On our worst days I think it is fair to say we are a hundred times better than any Republican candidate.” From his victory speech... Read more

A couple days ago I blogged about the Russian man who faces a year in prison merely for saying, “There is no god” on the internet. Catholic priest Alexander Lucie-Smith has penned a wonderful article at the Catholic Herald in opposition to Russia’s blasphemy law and in defense of the blasphemer.  Credit where credit is due: The relationship between Church and State in Russia is close, too close, and this is bad for both Church and State and ordinary citizens. It is... Read more

Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt is a Texas abortion case which is presently in oral arguments before the Supreme Court.  The state of Texas is arguing for restrictions that would force abortion clinics to upgrade to hospital standards.  By their assertion, this is to protect women’s health.  In reality, and people on both sides are fully aware of this, the point is to get abortion clinics to close (but lying to win is apparently ok if Jesus has your back). If... Read more

A bunch of Tennessee atheist groups have put together a one day convention, NaNoCon, that’s coming off tomorrow and is getting coverage in the local press: …several organizations, including Murfreesboro Freethinkers and Sunday Assembly Nashville, have banded together to offer a free, one-day conference for the religiously unaffiliated in Nashville. The first-ever event, called Nashville Nones Convention or NaNoCon, will be held Saturday at Glencliff High School. … Organizers also booked a big name from the secular world. David Silverman,... Read more

Yesterday my meds started really kicking in.  That’s not unusual for me.  SSRIs have always been a really good treatment for me and start to work their magic rapidly.  For most people they take about two weeks, for some it’s a month. Anyway, it’s a wonderful feeling. I feel like the world is more colorful. I saw my reflection in the mirror and wondered in shock if this is how the rest of the world sees me. Of course, it... Read more

American Atheists’ Amanda Knief is at CPAC where she saw this sign: Irony thy name is #GOP #CPAC2016 pic.twitter.com/JTLaAc5gi6 — Amanda Knief (@amandaknief) March 3, 2016 They must want CPAC to be less safe and a wide open target for the terrorists. This sends a very clear message: prohibiting guns will make CPAC safer, but it will make the entire country less safe. Read more
