Everyone has the power to manifest miracles if they only believe that it is possible.  I was fortunate to have parents who taught me to believe in and have faith in God.  My Mother experienced a bona fide miracle many years ago when my brother and sister and I were infants.

My Father, a linotype operator, had been laid off from his job and, with a wife and young children to support, I imagine he was pretty anxious to find another job. When he heard about a possible job opening in the next town, he called and made an appointment to interview, left some money with my mother to take care of us, and was on his way.

He was gone longer than anticipated, and my Mother told me that her funds got very low. She was actually down to her last two dollars and had no idea how that small amount of money would feed all of us until my Father returned. She stood at the bureau in her bedroom, holding those two one-dollar bills in her hand, frantically running through her mind how she would make it work. Finally, she let out a sigh, opened the bureau drawer, and dropped the two bills into the drawer.

As she pushed the drawer shut, the mustard seed pendant hanging on her watch band got caught in the drawer and she had to pull it open to extricate the pendant. Suddenly she stopped and stared at that pendant, remembering the significance of the mustard seed. The Bible verse in Matthew 17:20 stated: “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, ‘Remove hence to yonder place’; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”

It occurred to her that perhaps she should send a prayer to God, asking for help.  She prayed, “Lord, I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how I’m going to feed all of us with these two dollars, so I’m asking for Your help. Please help me, Lord.” She shut the drawer and went about her business.

Later in the day the next-door neighbor stopped by to see if she could pick up anything for my Mother at the grocery store. My Mother said, “Sure, just wait one minute while I get some money.” All the time she was headed to the bedroom she was frantically trying to decide what she could buy with her paltry two dollars. She pulled open the drawer – AND STARED AT A TWENTY-DOLLAR BILL LYING WHERE THE TWO ONE-DOLLAR BILLS HAD BEEN BEFORE!  That money was enough to take care of us until my Father returned.

I still have that mustard seed pendant that my Mother wore on her watch band.  Every time I look at it, I silently thank my Mother for showing me that miracles can happen every day, if we have faith and open ourselves to believe that miracles are possible.
