One of the greatest obstacles to living one’s best life is a cluttered mind — a mind filled with thoughts, emotions, memories and audio clips from other people. Taken individually, no single bit of clutter matters, but collectively they create a mountain, separating us from the free, expansive thinking that creates peace, progress and innovation.

If we could transform the mind environment into a physical space, we would see that many of us are mental hoarders and pack rats living in cramped squalor.

Cleaning up the mind is similar to cleaning out a junk-filled garage.  It takes patience, focus and the willingness to let go of all you don’t need.

Start by becoming a quiet observer of your mind.  What thoughts are automatic?  Listen to the mental chatter.  What memories recur frequently?  Become aware of the “normal” environment in your mind.  Discover the story and script you’re living.  Jot it all down.  The goal is to become aware.

Under the light of awareness is it relatively easy to distinguish between useful, supportive, empowering mind matter and outmoded, automatic, hindering junk.

You may feel overwhelmed, as though this project is too massive to complete.

Take heart, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

It took a lifetime to fill your mind.  It will take far less time to clean it up.  Just get started.

It is useful to work from the outside in.  Change up your routines, eat, dress, drive, exercise and socialize differently.  Clean your closets, reorganize your kitchen.  Shift the boundaries and structures of your life.

Every time you do something differently or let go of something physical, attach a no longer needed thought, memory or belief to it.  State aloud that you are ready to release the thought and you are handing it over to the universe.  Let it go.

Anchoring mental action to physical action tells the universe and  your entire being that you’re changing and you’re serious about it.  It also imprints new associations and memories on the mind.

When an automatic thought you’ve released resurfaces, you’ll notice it and rewrite it by reminding yourself that you’ve released it.  In time the automated mind phantoms won’t return.

As the mind become spacious and expansive, creativity, brilliant ideas, bliss and self-empowerment are heightened.  Letting go feels good and becomes an enjoyable habit with monumental benefits.

You become the designer of your interior and there is no limit to what you can be, do and have.
