Between Two Worlds: Transgender Day of Remembrance 2022

Between Two Worlds: Transgender Day of Remembrance 2022 November 16, 2022

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is an annual observance on November 20th of every year that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. To remember until we all are accepted for just being us, human beings.

The 20th of November each year is a very solemn reminder of that. I write about this every year, and participate in an observance every November 20th at Circle Sanctuary. This year, again, it will be online.

What is the Transgender Day of Remembrance? Quoted from Wikipedia:

“The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed on November 28, 1998. The vigil commemorates all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.”

This year is the 24th anniversary of TDoR.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people – sometimes in the most brutal ways possible, it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice.”

Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith

The data is collected from the first day of October to the last day of September each year. That way the data is accurate for the vigil on November 20th of each year. I want to publicly thank Anna-Jayne Metcalfe of TransLivesMatter and Kelli Anne Busey of PlanetTrans for their hard work collecting all of this data.

Unfortunately this year one of my good friends, Mika Ellen Orzech passed from this life on January 25th. She started Trans Violence News on Facebook many years ago and was one of my sources for what I’ve reported on these posts. I wrote a memorial blog article about her. You can read it here.

This reporting period there were 389 reported deaths of transgender people worldwide. Only the deaths that are reported are used. There are many, many more that go unreported each year.
