Mackinac Island, Michigan

Founded in 1670, the only way to get to this summer retreat is by small plane or ferry (the most popular means). You won’t find automobiles on this island either. To make your way around you can bring or rent a bicycles, take a horse and carriage ride or lace up your sneakers and walk it. The circumference is just 8 miles, but most of the restaurants and lodging are along the main street. Two battles took place on the Island, the fort still standing and able to tour. It is notable for the filming of the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Once you step foot on Mackinac Island you really do feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, and the beauty of Lake Huron, which makes you ache to stay. At least until winter comes. Maybe it’s the beauty, along with the reminiscence of simpler times why so many spirits haven’t left either. So no matter where you stay, you might encounter a haunting or two.
