The city’s oldest Jewish synagogue and oldest Islamic mosque are coming together this weekend, honoring Jewish-Islamic relations.

Members of the Masjid Jihad mosque will join the congregation of Mickve Israel for Shabbat Services and dinner Friday at the synagogue. Imam Maajid Ali will speak.

I’m reminded of a Quranic verse that discusses the moral imperative to uphold religious freedom:

Those who have been expelled from their homes without a just cause except that they say: Our Lord is Allah. And had there not been Allah's repelling some people by others, certainly there would have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques in which Allah's name is much remembered; and surely Allah will help him who helps His cause; most surely Allah is Strong, Mighty.<br/>The Holy Quran, The Pilgrimage (22), verse 40

Such sentiments are ironically decidedly more ecumenical than the worldviews frequently espoused today by conflict-stoking “Christians” on the American Right.
