Zelensky, Democracy, & Humanity or Putin/Trump and Fascism

Zelensky, Democracy, & Humanity or Putin/Trump and Fascism February 25, 2025

I haven’t published anything in a while. My mind, heart, and even body haven’t been able to bear the current state of our country and the free world.  For the first time in American history on February 20, 2025, the USA sided with Russia instead of Ukraine during a United Nations vote.    Reuters, an internationally respected news source, gives more detail here. Many other articles can be found on this subject.

When the USA will not co-sponsor support for Ukraine, side with Russia, cause conflict with our allies, and align more with our adversaries, we know we are in serious trouble.  How did Republicans go from the party of Ronald Reagan to the party of Donald Trump?

I think it actually started with Ronald Reagan himself.  Ronald Reagan’s policies of foreign diplomacy, supporting our allies, and standing strong against our adversaries and dictators in the 1980s were hallmark strengths of Ronald Reagan’s presidency and antithetical to Donald Trump’s foreign affairs today. But I believe there was a dark side to Reagan’s presidency which involved the vetoing the Fairness Doctrine and Trickle-Down Economics.  In the 1980s, lawmakers became concerned about a potential monopoly control of the three main networks of that time: NBC, ABC, and CBS. The Fairness Doctrine mandated that these networks devote time to contrasting views on issues of public importance. However, in 1987, the president of the National Association of Broadcasters applauded Ronald Reagan’s veto of this bill which later gave birth to biased channels like Fox News.

Fox News was founded by Rupert Murdoch in 1996 with the intent to practice biased and false reporting in favor of the Republican party, its politicians, and conservative causes while portraying the Democratic party and social causes in negative lights.  Fox News doesn’t identify itself as a major news network but as a mass media company.  The removal of the Fairness Doctrine and the long-term damage of Fox News (and other right-winged news sources)  from the 1990s until present day have created increasing hate, misinformation, and intentional disinformation in middle-aged and older adults.  I thank God for those my age (53) and older who have not ingested Fox News and other sources of right-winged media as their primary sources of information for decades which do not align with reality.

I also believe that trickle-down economics has taken its toll on the most vulnerable of Americans over the last 50 years since Reagan’s presidency.  Reaganomics have been proven to increase poverty and inequality over time.  The idea that tax cuts for the wealthy will improve the standard of living for the working class is showing itself to be negative for anyone without significant financial means.  This has weakened the middle class and workers rights over time and therefore weakening most of America. This allowed the current-day billionaire class to commit a reversed Robinhood approach and syphon off millions to oligarchs taken from every day working people.

Robert Reich is one of the top economic experts on this subject.   He gives great details on how we have arrived to our current state.

I believe the hardships of vetoing the 1980s Fairness Doctrine and Trickle-Down economics over time have made it easier to usher in the authoritarian regime we have today.  Paired together, these two components have worn on the bodies, minds, finances, and families of millions of Americans for decades. It’s up to Americans of goodwill to obtain the correct facts and stand with those most vulnerable among us.  I invite you to call your representatives, peacefully protest, and participate in economic boycotts. Only the American people can save our country from oligarchs and our historic adversaries.
