Today I am with family in East Texas and had the option to stay home alone due to my Parkinson’s. Even though trips over an hour are quite difficult for me, being alone today, the day after the “Big Beautiful (Ugly) Bill was passed, was less of an option for me. Being alone today would be terrifying for me.
For the first time in my life, I will not be celebrating the 4th of July because millions of people in our country have been viciously attacked by the overreaching hands of our own government. Freedoms/civil rights, safety, health, and the right-to-life are currently being stripped away from the minority-majority. I saw a Black University professor recently say that there is an attempt to harm, remove, and/or destroy anyone who is not white in this country. I believe she may be correct, but I will add a few. Anyone who is not white, straight, Republican, upper-middle class and above, and conservative Christian is in danger of being harmed, removed, or destroyed. This is most of the country. The only people who will benefit are the top 15-20% income bracket through the expense of the other 80-85%.
The American people will remember the day, July 3, 2025, when MAGAs passed the cruelest and most destructive piece of legislation in modern history which attacks the working class, the middle class, and especially poor people and minority groups which is the minority-majority.
The items in this ghastly bill will profoundly impact my own family, the disability community I serve, and my broader community. The department of health in my county alone here in San Antonio predicts that 445,000 children will lose Medicaid. Half of the newborn births in Texas are paid for by Medicaid. With over one trillion dollars in cuts to Medicaid that MAGA promised they wouldn’t touch, this places the elderly, the disabled, expectant mothers, their babies, and may vulnerable populations at risk. Veterans benefits have been cut as well to various degrees, including suicide hotlines.
The Big Ugly Bill will transfer wealth from the bottom 80% to give tax breaks to the top 20% which is Reverse Robinhood Economics. The largest tax percentage will be on the backs of the poorest Americans while people making over $350,000/year will pay the lowest percentage in taxes. This marks the largest Reverse Robinhood transfer of wealth in American history.
MAGA and Trump also promised that they knew nothing about Project 2025. MAGA lied about this too because the Big Ugly Bill IS Project 2025. This Big Ugly Bill will also fund more ICE raids, detention centers, and concentration camps. When MAGAs are cheering for Alligator Alcatraz, the newest death camp built which intentionally targets 65 million Lations according to Laura Loomer, something is deeply racist and dreadfully wrong in America. MAGA has sold out the next two generations to satisfy their own greed, selfishness, and cruelty. Proclaiming that MAGA is prolife and Christian is a crock of sh*t.
I am not celebrating the 4th of July today because a fascist takeover is killing American democracy. I am in mourning for what our government is doing to the freedoms, health, lives, and the safety of majority of people on US soil. As Maya Angelou said, none of us are free until all of us are free.
