Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) is an extremist rebel leader (aka “Terrorist”) who leads a militia, called the “Partisans” who use extreme tactics, such as torture and attacks on civilians in their fight against the Imperial Forces who were occupying the Holy City of Jedha. Of course the mainstream leaders of the Rebel Alliance are against the tactics of Saw Gerrera, who they feel is hurting their cause by his extremist actions. This is very similar to “Muslim” extremist or so-called “terrorist” leaders such as Osama bin Laden or Mullah Omar, who although were fighting on the side of (and most likely trained by) American forces against the Soviet Union in the 1980’s, then became their enemy, with one of the main reasons being given that US Military forces are occupying the Holy lands of Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries. One can also draw a connection between the Taliban (also originally supported by the United States) who after ousting the Russians from Afghanistan, because extreme in their understanding of Islam (I would say distorted understanding) and also began attacking civilians.
