: Britain’s New Converts to Islam

New faces in the Muslim community gather at ArRum, a trendy new Islamic restaurant in London. Sufi wailing calms the nerves, while the bar specialises in healthy juices and halal ‘fusion’ food. Many of these Muslims are post 9/11 converts to Islam, and most are women. Though data is hard to come by, several London mosques have been reporting an increase in the number of converts to Islam after 9/11. Many of these converts are from solid middle-class backgrounds, have successful careers, enjoy active social lives and are fundamentally happy with their lot, and are starting to assert themselves in both British and Muslim circles.
