Despite support from every major American Muslim organization, Imam Jamil Al-Amin was convicted of murder in Atlanta for the killing of an Atlanta police officer last year. Although Al-Amin, a Muslim leader who once headed the North America Shura Council, has been widely praised for his work over the past few decades fighting drugs and prostitution in inner city neighborhoods around the country, his continuous battle with the authorities seems to have caught up with him. The fact that he fled the state after the shootings did not help his case much. Supporters of Al-Amin claim that there is a conspiracy that reaches back decades to frame him – and there have been compelling cases of witness intimidation by police to finger Al-Amin for a variety of charges – but unless these counter-charges prevail in the appeal process, Al-Amin faces life imprisonment or the death penalty.
