Until last year, most people knew of Malaysia as the recent home of the world’s tallest buildings. But the Southeast Asian nation has been rattled by connections to suspected 9/11 hijackers and other terrorists, including frequent visits and links to domestic insurgents. On the other hand, despite the authoritarian government of Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia enjoys one of the highest standard of livings in the region and most experts (and the FBI) agree that chances of swinging toward fundamentalism are “quite small”… as long as people still have their nice homes and cars.
