Most mosques lately have been seeking to be less visible, but a mosque in downtown San Francisco that found itself with some highly visible wall space facing the city’s main street are going to make a statement with it. Joining the local tradition of painting murals depicting the diversity and color of the local community, the Islamic Society of San Francisco will have a mural painted onto a wall facing Market Street that is designed and painted by the Muslim community. Local artist and cartoonist Khalil Bendib, photographer Said Nuseibeh, and artist Fayeq Oweis have designed a mural showing a placid scene of an Andalusian mosque. Muslim groups such as the Bay Area’s AMILA are recruiting budding artists in the community to help paint the mural, which should be finished sometime this summer.
