Hard Work with Sincerity

As a non-profit management consultant I was blown away how Edhi was able to build up his foundation from its humble beginnings to a powerhouse of good in Pakistan. In a country plagued by corruption, economic woes, social and political challenges, Edhi distinguished himself as a man of honor, principle, integrity, and compassion. He exemplified the very best of not only Pakistan, but of humanity.

Edhi’s life’s work stood out as a beacon of hope for all. What is important to realize about the legacies of Edhi and Muhammad Ali is that they never made themselves the center of their work. They used their popularity and celebrity to gain attention to issues that matter. It was never about them, but the cause.

Unfortunately, today many Muslim activists may make the mistake of making themselves the center of attention and putting their image on the forefront rather than the cause they are passionate about. Edhi and Ali always made sure that the cause was in the forefront.

Their humility, sincerity and genuine nature is what made them successful. We as Muslims, must move away from the temptation of fame and celebrity. We have too many celebrity activists and Muslims seeking photo-ops with big name Hollywood celebrities and politicians.

One of the most powerful quotes I remember reading was when a reporter asked Abdul-Sattar Edhi how he felt about not having won the Nobel Peace Prize. He responded, “It means nothing to me. I want these people! I want Humanity!”
