Mental Health
Mental health awareness and training is extremely important in handling the needs of Muslim congregations. Imams need to not necessarily become experts or get advanced degrees in mental health, but they should understand its importance in our community today. So many of our brothers and sisters, regardless of ethnic, racial or national background are dealing with different levels of emotional, mental, psychological trauma and mental health challenges. Imams should work closely with local mental health professionals (and spend some time creating a roster of local mental health professionals for referrals and consultations) to learn more. Imams should also help partner and create an environment in our masjids that promote non-judgmental attitudes when it comes to seeking mental health services. We must have our imams speak up against the stigma of mental health in our community.
