On the Importance of Seeking Knowledge
“Hello, are you there? Is anyone listening?” For those that have been in class with Usama or learn from him, that phrase is commonplace and is a signal to take notes and pay closer attention. Usama teaches us all to seek knowledge in every aspect of life. There is rarely a class that he doesn’t give you a book suggestion that is outside traditional Islamic teachings. He challenges you to think past your normative lenses and to continue to expand your growth by seeking more knowledge from diverse voices.
“Usama teaches me to view stories from the Seerah through more than just a societal or historical lens and to take them past the ways in which they are used to derive legal rulings. Almost every story he shares from the Prophet’s life (and his companions) is dissected for its lessons in how to be a better human being. Learning these stories became so personal, and it transforms the way by which I experience the Seerah of our beloved Prophet (pbuh). It makes me walk away, every time, with a desire to be better and more intentional in my interactions.” – Cima Dairanieh, Chicago, IL
“Usama teaches with a unique combination of the excellence of our tradition and modern relevancy. His words have always inspired me to understand the simplicity of our beautiful path and encouraged me to be well read in many disciplines. Several years ago, I heard him cite the African proverb, “If the youth are not initiated in the village, they will burn it down to feel its warmth.” He inspires me to commit my time and attention to loving the youth around me and nurturing young hearts.” – Zaynab Salman, Troy, MI
