I have been a Washington Redskins football fan since I was 11.
On PostTV of The Washington Post last week, Washington Post sports columnist Mike Wise and Oneida Indian Nation leader Ray Halbritter discussed the name Redskins.
I have come to the point that I can no longer support the name “Redskins.” I am a fan of the Washington football club. I still root for RGIII. However, I would love for the team to change their nickname. This is an amazing opportunity for owner Daniel Snyder to do the right thing. Heck, it would completely change my view of Snyder. Trust me, that would be a drastic change for me.
I do not hate the football team, I just hate the name. I want to be able to get hats and t-shirts that for that team. With the current name, I just cannot do that.
I think part of my change of heart on this matter is that I am not just a football fan, but I am also the father of two sons (11 and 13) who are young football fans. I want this change because of them as much as anything else.
I invite others who have rooted for John Riggins, Darrell Green, and other Washington football greats to join me in calling for this change. We are not rejecting a football tradition in doing so. Instead, we are making it better.
